Originally known simply as Ashton nestling on the banks of the River Tame it was in medieval times a thriving market town and remained so until the 18th century. This town, like many in the North West of England at this time relied on coal mining lying as it does in the South Lancashire Coal Field. Ashton further developed as a cotton producing town using locally produced coal fired engines instead of steam power in some of their mills. By 1811 there were three canals servicing Ashton and it was around this time that there was some confusion with the number of places called Ashton. In order to differentiate itself from the others it took the name Ashton Under Lyne. Ashton under Lyne and its wealth was secured through to the early 20th century, electric trams were introduced and new schools were built, all signs of a successful growing town. Then cheap imports of cotton started arriving and in turn this virtually destroyed the local industry. Ashton though was determined to adapt and change with plenty of re-building and modernisation of the town. Today Ashton retains strong links with its past, there are around 80 listed buildings in the area. In contrast to the historic is the modern Arcades Shopping Centre and the Ladysmith Shopping Centre, the town also boasts a cinema, theatre, art gallery and two museums as well as a wide range of pubs and clubs.
