| Events in Egypt Point | 10 Places to Stay

Egypt Point is the most northerly spot on the island and one of Queen Victoria's favourite places. From here, she was known to enjoy the magnificent sunsets and a panoramic view of the Solent. Both are enduring attractions. Just a short stroll along the esplanade from its easterly neighbour, Cowes, Egypt Point is a must for anyone interested in sailing: its waters are alive with all kinds of colourful seafaring craft, from yachts and speedboats to liners and ferries. This is the spectator's perfect vantage point for the annual Round-The-Island yacht race. There is good sea-fishing too. On a rising tide, bumper quantities of mackerel, bass and flatfish can be caught, as well as the occasional lobster. Egypt Point features prominently in the itineraries of many organised walks around the island, and it's often visited by scuba divers hoping for a glimpse of a wrecked British steamer, sunk by a mine in 1916. Part of the hull survives underwater. A particular point of interest is the Point's unusually shaped lighthouse. Now out of commission, the 25-feet tower was built in 1897, its central red post rising from a round, white base to be topped with a white lantern.
