The smallest ancient Cathderal in Britain is to be found in this Welsh village that has the clear crystal waters of the River Elwy running through it. St Asaph is to be found in the County of Flintshire and the cathedral has, in its history, been destroyed at least three times – the building you see now was rebuilt mainly in the 14th century and subsequently remodelled by the Victorians. Today the Cathedral plays host to the North Wales Music Festival which is usually held in September. From the Cathedral, proceeding down the hill the High Street is lined with the local traditional shops. The River Elwy and the Parish Church of St Kentigern and St Asaph are to be found here at the bottom of the hill. The church taking its name from the exiled Bishop Kentigern who established a monastery on the banks of the river whilst Asaph was the name of one of his favourite students at the monastery which was established around 560AD. St Asaph is an excellent location as close as it is to the A55 North Wales Expressway and this makes it an ideal base for visiting the rest of North East Wales, either the seaside and all that it has to offer or the surrounding hills and mountains.
