Originally known as Din-Gonwy is to be found in North Wales lying almost midway between Llandudno and Conwy – the name meant “Fort on the River Conwy” and it was one of the main residences of King Maelgwyn who built his castle here on this rocky outcrop overlooking the town which is better known today as Deganwy, the castle though no longer remains having been demolished by the Welsh Prince Llewelyn ap Gruffydd to prevent the English from using it ever again. As early as the 12th century there was a dock in Deganwy but it wasn’t until the 1880’s that it became an important part of the area’s economy. At the time slate quarrying was at its peak and most of the slate was being exported via Porthmadog. The London and North Western Railway Company constructed Deganwy Dock and this meant that Deganwy provided an alternate shipping point for the slate. Up until around 1914 Deganwy was at its busiest, exporting local slate and importing timber from Scandanavia and then the First World War saw a decline in the fortunes of the town and the docks. instead of the bustling port it once was, were then used by local boat builders, builders merchants and winter storage of boats. Until recently Deganwy suffered, whereas Conwy and Llandudno had built a tourist industry Deganwy had relied on industry and this had been in sad decline for a number of years. Today though Deganwy is adapting and is embracing tourism with the construction of a new hotel, apartments overlooking the Conwy Estuary and its own marina. It benefits from its central location between Conwy and Llandudno and is ideally placed for visits to Snowdonia or to the many towns along the Welsh coast.
