Merthyr Tydfil is located on the A470 north of Cardiff. Merthyr boasts a fine industrial heritage – it was once the capital of the iron and steel industries having four major ironworks established during the C18. With the advent of rail it became the largest town in Wales - sadly later declining. Cyfartha Castle Museum and Art gallery built in 1824 is a real celebration of the industrial revolution. As well as housing impressive collections, it is set in acres of parkland with: gardens, a lake, play facilities etc. For an idea of how the other half lived, visit Joseph Parry’s Ironworker’s cottage in Chapel Row. Parry – composer of the hymn Myfanwy - was born here in the C19 and the cottage has an exhibition dedicated to his life and work Merthyr is named for the female martyr St Tydfil and functions as the gateway to the beautiful and rugged Brecon Beacons National Park whose deceptive rolling landscape has seduced many a walker into going further than they meant. Take good maps it might be safer to admire the scenery by vintage steam train – the Brecon Mountain Railway runs from Pontsticill 3 miles north of Merthyr, much less energetic!
