Ebbw Vale at the head of the Ebbw Fawr valley in Blaenau Gwent is a town which was built on steel! Its population today is 18,000 (33,000 if you include the Brynmawr conurbation area) and at its height during the 1930’s and 40’s the steelworks was the largest in Europe. The world’s first steel rail was rolled here in 1857 and it is said that the Sydney Harbour Bridge was constructed with iron and steel from these works. Ebbw Vale suffered greatly during the industrial decline so in 1992 a Garden Festival was sited here with the purpose of kick starting regeneration into this impoverished area. Today, the Garden Festival site is home to over 200 houses, the Lakeside Gym, the Festival Park Factory Shopping Village, the Festival Park Owl Sanctuary, the Festival Angling Club (FAC), and sculptures and features from the Garden Festival itself. The future hopes for Ebbw Vale have also been lifted by the re-opening of the rail link between Ebbw Vale and Cardiff. This beautiful route attracts tourists and commuters alike. Many visit this area to enjoy the spectacular Cwmcarn Forest drive – a magnet for walkers, mountain bikers and campers with its welcoming refurbished visitors’ centre.
