Llanwrtyd Wells is to be found in mid Wales it is split by the river Irfon, and tucked in the valley between the Cambrian Mountains and the Mynydd Epynt an area that is a designated Special Area of Conservation. Originally its fame grew from the mineral waters at Dol-Y-Coed Park which had curative powers. Indeed the Vicar of St David’s is accredited with this find back in around 1732, he tried the waters himself and it helped cure his scurvy! Based on his experience he wrote about Llanwrtyd Wells and the therapeutic powers of the waters and this saw visitors to the town increase dramatically. In order to capitalise on these new found tourists a number of buildings were erected to accommodate these visitors and today they remain part of the attraction of the town. For those who are fans of that great Welsh sport rugby then Llanwrtyd Wells should hold a place dear to your heart for it was in this town that two visitors, Talog Williams and Rev DM Davies composed the famous rugby song Sospan Fach. Acknowledged as the smallest town in Britain Llanwrtyd Wells is also famous for the number of festivals it plays host to – everything from the Bog Snorkelling Contest throught to the Man versus Horse Race and the Real Ale Wobble – at last count there were around 12 festivals being held every year here add to that the location and activities available in the area such as trekking, hill walking and fishing amongst others then this town holds more delights than you can imagine.
