Galashiels is a historic town in the Borders region of Scotland situated on the Gala Waters at a junction with the Tweed River, five miles north of Selkirk and 28 miles south-east of Edinburgh. The town was granted Burgh of Barony in 1599. Galashiels grew as a mill town, mills were built in 1780 and by 1882 there were 21 mills in town. Although the textile industry went into decline Galashiels remains an important centre for tweed, tartan and cashmere, Lochcarron of Scotland is a popular attraction; it has a visitor centre, shop and guided tours. Galasheils is an ideal tourist destination with holiday accommodation, pubs, restaurants and many things to see and do. Historically interesting features include the Burgh Chamber built in 1867 with clock tower added c1920, the Border Reiver horseman, an impressive war memorial sculpted by the local Thomas Clapperton. The Old Gala House was built in 1583 as the residence of the lairds of Galashiels, the house is set in landscaped gardens and now houses the local history museum and art gallery. The Gala Aisle is a small building in the old parish church built in 1636 and is the burial vault of the Scotts of Gala. Cyclists can access the 90 mile Tweed Cycle Way, walkers can join the Southern Upland Way and sight-seers can book driving tours to visit the many Border Abbeys.
