Coldstream is a historic town in Berwickshire in the Borders region of Scotland situated on the north-bank of the River Tweed 14 miles south-west of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Known as the ‘gateway to England’ Coldstream sits at the lowest point of the River Tweed which was used historically as the point to ford the river and cross the border. Scottish and English armies crossed here en-route to various battles; as a result Coldstream was destroyed and attacked several times in its early history. James IV stayed in Coldstream on his way to battle at nearby Flodden Field in 1513 and in 1659 General Monck made it the headquarters of his new regiment known now as the Coldstream Guards. Surrounded by beautiful countryside with views of the Cheviot Hills Coldstream is a popular tourist destination with hotels, holiday accommodation, places to eat and a selection of shops. Henderson Gardens is a park in the centre of town with a monument to the Coldstream Guards, floral displays and a panoramic view-point over the River Tweed. The Coldstream Museum has displays detailing the history of the parish and the highly regarded Coldstream Guards there is a picnic area and children’s corner. Activities include horse-riding and hot-air ballooning; the golf course lies opposite the Hirsel Country Park, which marks the border between Scotland and England.
