Lossiemouth is a sea-town in Moray, on the north-east coast of Scotland, situated 5 miles north of Elgin on the south shore of the Moray Firth. Due to its location at the mouth of the River Lossie, Lossiemouth, was developed as a port in the 17th century to service Elgin’s trade although the town was not developed until the 1800’s. The harbour opened in 1835 and Lossiemouth became an important fishing town, the old harbour is now occupied by the yachting marina. Lossiemouth is a traditional fishing town with little cottages, the Fisheries and Communities Museum, a fishing fleet and fish-market. The town also has a variety of shops and amenities, a theatre, a library, a swimming pool and Community Centre. Lossiemouth is a popular tourist resort with spectacular scenery, beautiful countryside and two long sandy beaches, the Covesea Lighthouse sits on the West Beach, and the East Beach runs parallel with the sea and the river. Activities include boat trips to spot the Moray Dolphins and Whales, sailing, surfing and sea angling. There are cliff walks, a cycle-path running from Lossiemouth to Elgin and two golf courses. The RAF base opened in Lossiemouth in 1939 giving the opportunity to see Tornado aircraft and Sea King helicopters.
