The Aberdeenshire village of Cruden Bay is roughly equidistant from Peterhead and Ellon as the crow flies, sitting on the Bay of Cruden. Some living in the settlement work in those places, likewise in Aberdeen about 30 miles to the south, but there is local employment in the tourist industry and sea-fishing and processing too. As regards tourism there are several draws for visitors: the most famous is perhaps Slains Castle, built in 1597, later in its life possibly the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s imagining of Dracula’s castle – Stoker was a regular guest in Cruden Bay. The sands include a huge area of dunes famed for birdlife – Forvie National Nature Reserve - as are the cliffs; and a couple of miles north is the beauty-spot called Bullers of Buchan, a great gash in those cliffs. Third great draw is the local golf course, said by those who enjoy a good walk spoiled to be one of the best links courses in Scotland, which is saying something. There is history in the salt air too: in 1022 the Scots defeated a Norse army here; and in the 1770s Johnson and Boswell stayed at the castle. With a population nearing 2000 Cruden Bay is big enough to have a primary school, library, doctor’s surgery, pub and various shops, and its visitors are catered for by both hotels and B&Bs.
