Linlithgow is an ancient Royal Burgh in west Lothian in Scotland situated 18 miles west of Edinburgh, famous for its Royal Palace, the birthplace of James V in 1512 and Mary Queen of Scots in 1542 The ruins of the magnificent 15th century Linlithgow Palace stand in beautiful parkland, known as the Peel, on a promontory jutting into Linlithgow Loch. Beside the Palace stands St Michaels Parish church, consecrated in 1242 and is a fine example of a large medieval church. The town is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful surroundings and interesting history which is told in The Linlithgow Story Museum in Annet House. There are hotels and holiday accommodation including a caravan and camping park, customised tours, a busy shopping centre, an award winning Bistro, cafes and restaurants. The Linlithgow Canal Centre has a museum and canal boat-trips to cruise the Union Canal to the Avon Aqueduct. There is a leisure centre and an activity centre with golf-range and helicopter pilot training, a nine-hole golf course, the Beecraigs Country Park has a visitor centre, a trout farm, woodland walks and a children’s play area and the Muiravonside Country Park is home to the 17th century Muiravonside House. The Linlithgow Loch is a bird sanctuary which also offers fishing and water-sports including canoeing, sailing and windsurfing.
