Bo’ness is a town in Scotland situated on the south bank of the Firth of Forth, 2 miles north of Linlithgow and 5 miles east of Falkirk. The town’s full name is ‘Borrowstounness’, meaning ‘Burgh town on the Ness’, ness being the promontory which the harbour was built c1400 to export the locally mined coal. Bo’ness received its burgh charter in 1668. A Roman settlement dates back to cAD142 with the remains of a fort in the Kinneil Estate and traces of the 37 mile Antonine Wall, built by the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius. Other historically interesting features include the Bo’ness Town Hall (1904), Bridgeness Tower; a former windmill and observatory and Kinneil House. With views across the Forth to Culross and the Ochil Hills, Bo’ness is a popular tourist destination with hotels and holiday accommodation, pubs, shops, cafes and restaurants. Attractions include the Kinneil Museum, the Bo’ness and Kinnell Railway steam trains operating to the Birkhill Fire Clay Mine, which offers guided tours of the underground workings and fossils dating back 300-million years, the Bo’ness Motor Museum with a collection of cars and motorcycles including the Lotus Esprit used in the Bond movie ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ it also has a bar and a children’s play corner and the West Lothian Golf Club with an 18-hole golf course set in parkland
