Coupar Angus is an historic town on the banks of the Isla River, in the County of Perth, although it nudges the eastern edge of Angus in Scotland, and is home to over two thousand people. Industry has played its part in the development of the town throughout the ages with both agriculture, and weaving, when the hand weavers worked from home in the 18th Century, to the arrival of the Industrial Revolution when mechanisation took hold in the 19th Century. Also from the times of the Roman Legions who encamped on the eastern side of the town, a legacy of which remains, to the Cistercian Monks who built an Abbey here in the 12th Century. Unfortunately the Abbey met its demise with King Henry VIII's Reformation, after which the stone was used in the building of the church, with the exception of part of the Abbey Arch. Visitors can enjoy an eclectic mix of architecture lining the roads from the remains of the 12th Century Abbey, to the impressive Tower, the Tolbooth built in 1702 which was also used as a courthouse and prison, to Victorian and modern houses. Today's visitors will uncover a good choice of B&B's, and places to stay, shops, restaurants, a colourful market and welcoming pubs to enjoy.
