Tallaght is a large, busy town located about eight miles south west of Dublin city centre, in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. An ancient settlement that developed round an important 8th Century monastery, Tallaght has expanded very quickly since the 1970s to become a centre for industry, housing, sports, shopping, arts and culture, with a shiny new arts centre, Rua Red, recently adding to the existing venues and theatres. The old village, with its intimate shops and eateries, sits alongside a modern town centre filled with hotels, bars, civic buildings and a huge shopping complex called The Square, one of the biggest in Ireland. Here, visitors can spend many happy hours browsing more than 160 stores. The Square also boasts a multiplex cinema and a choice of restaurants. Despite its predominantly urban character, Tallaght offers some lovely changes of scenery with green spaces such as Tymon Park, whose lakes are home to large wildfowl colonies, and the Sean Walsh Memorial Park, where families may like to savour the attractive ornamental gardens and water features before heading off for a spot of retail therapy at the neighbouring Square. Golfers have a choice of several excellent courses, including Newlands Golf Club, within easy reach of Tallaght.
