Warnham village is situated about 2 miles north west of Horsham. It was the birthplace of one of Britain's greatest poets, Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was born at Field Place in 1792. The Shelleys had been Sussex landowners for generations; it was Shelley`s grandfather who built Castle Goring. Field Place is a small 15th century country house forming three sides of a courtyard, the fourth side was closed off in the C17th - probably 1678 - by a taller block. Shelley became estranged from his father so that when he returned home in 1815 after the death of his grandfather he was refused entry to the house, whilst the will was being read Shelley sat outside reading Milton`s Comus. Shelley`s son is buried in the churchyard of St.Margaret's; the church is mostly Victorian (1885) except for the north aisle which is C14th and the C16th tower. There is some fine stained glass and the memorial to John Cargll (a Sussex Ironmaster) and his family is one of the most attractive in Sussex; especially interesting for the student of period costume as it depicts early C16th costume and dress. Warnham has a fine collection of weatherboard, roughcast, brick, tile hung and half-timbered cottages, including the C16th Sussex Oak, with dates ranging from the C16th to the C19th. Warnham Court is a neo-Elizabethan house of 1828.
