Events in Clifton | 10 Places to Stay
This fashionable district of Bristol is most famous for its suspension bridge. Clifton Suspension Bridge is a Grade One listed structure and one of the greatest engineering achievements of the Victorian age. It was designed and built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, perhaps the most famous of all the Great British engineers of those heady times. It was Brunel's first major commission, given to him when he won the second competition to design a bridge to span the beautiful but perilous Avon Gorge.
Brunel was only 24 years old when he was appointed project engineer but sadly he died in 1859, before the completion of the controversial bridge which was dogged by political and financial difficulties. Although the foundation stone was laid in 1831 it took until 1864 to complete. On opening it was dedicated as a memorial to the great entrepreneurial engineer who did so much to change the face of early Victorian Britain.
Clifton is still the vibrant and fashionable quarter it has long been. It's graced with fine Georgian and Victorian architecture and plenty of shops, hotels, bars and restaurants to tempt the residents and travellers alike. It's also a popular residential location for students of Bristol University.
