Yaxley, just to the south of Peterborough, is officially a village though with a population of more than 7000 it enjoys the facilities of a small town (and in the not too distant past indeed was a market town). In addition to the sacred trinity of shops, pubs and church it has a library, medical centre and small shopping centre, with of course easy access to its neighbouring city for any requirements it cannot cover. The church of St Peter with its elegant steeple dates from the 13th century, though with the usual organic additions thereafter, and is far from the only architectural link with the past: thatched buildings, cottages from the Jacobean (including some half-timbered examples), Georgian and Victorian eras. A village green completes the picture of the older element of the village near the low-lying fenland (including Holme Fen to the south-east, which is below sea-level), the higher ground having been developed more recently. Access to the village is easy, with junction 16 of the A1(M) a couple of minutes’ drive and the A15 crossing its western edge: and if the SatNav is on the blink you can spot the steeple from miles away.
