Between Durham, and Peterlee in County Durham in the north east of England, lies the small village of Haswell Plough, situated between South Hetton and Shotton Colliery on Salters Lane, a few miles from Easington and the A19 trunk road. Little is known of the history of the village prior to medieval times. The remains of a medieval chapel are recorded in a charter dated around 1300 but further back in its history, there was certainly an Anglo-Saxon settlement as the name is derived from Old English meaning ‘hazel spring or stream’. The village was however only first recorded in the 12th century, as ‘Heswella and Hessewelle. Consisting of three parts, it includes Haswell, Haswell Plough and High Haswell with High Haswell being the site of the original village, where only a few farms and dwellings now remain. The remains of what is regarded to be the foundations of the medieval chapel were discovered in a field known as Chapel Girth. A holy water stoup was found there and is now used as a font in the mission church at Haswell Plough. As its name indicates the area around Haswell Plough is largely rural and agricultural. It is however close to several former mining towns
