In County Durham, in north east England, lies the market town of Bishop Auckland, approximately twelve miles northwest of Darlington and south west of Durham city, at the confluence or the river Weir and its tributary Gaunless. The residence of the Bishop of Durham gives the town the first part of its name, whilst the origin or meaning of the second part is less clear. It is thought to have derived from the Celtic “Alclif” or “Alcleat” referring to its position close to the river now known as Gaunless or it could refer to “Oakland” acknowledging the presence of forests. The borough was given to the Bishop of Durham as a gift by King Canute around 1020 although a village is thought to have existed on this site long before that, with there being a church from early Saxon times in the nearby village of Escomb, built between 670 and 690AD which much of the stone from the Roman fort at nearby Binchester. The Romans road Dere Street passes through the town and the Romans also had a look-out post where Auckland Castle is situated today. Bishop Bek who preferred the residence to Durham Castle due to its proximity to the hunting grounds, converted the castle from a manor house. The town gre rapidly during the nineteenth century with the arrival of coal mining and the associated railways, which continued as a major industry until the massive decline during the 1960’s
