Lying around 8 miles south east of Derby is the pretty country village of Shardlow which is to be found just off the A50 – far enough away not to be bothered by such a busy road and yet close enough to make it convenient. The village, there was a settlement here during the time of the Domesday Book, grew because of its proximity to the River Trent and was at the time a busy port. The canal, The Trent Mersey canal, was at one time a major connection for most of the canal systems throughout the Midlands making this a tremendously busy place, only to be replaced by a speedier form of transport in the 18th century – the railways. The changes wrought upon this small town changed its character and the 1960’s saw major new housing developments in the area however some of the old canalside buildings were retained whilst the canal and river that was once the fortune of the village have been restored and are now again attracting visitors to this somewhat picturesque location. The village of Shardlow has some wonderful architectural features, there is the old salt warehouse, the oldest warehouse in the village which is today home to the Shardlow Heritage Centre, the Dog and Duck Inn – a cruck frame building whose timbers date back to the 15th century. For many people though the fact that it is nestling in the countryside and yet convenient for commuters means that this village will always have an enduring appeal.
