In a sheltered valley on the Western edge of Exmoor National Park lies the large coastal village of Combe Martin. The peaceful cove has changed little over time, though the harbour provides a welcome to more pleasure boats than fishing crafts these days. The area is ideal for family holidays with low tides leaving bare large expanses of golden sand. Visitors can enjoy the coastal and inland footpaths and bridleways on foot or horseback. Combe Martin’s main street is 2 miles long and locals claim, the longest village street in England. The highlight of the village year is the Pagan Spring ceremony of the Hunting of the Earl of Rome. The Earl is chased through the woods and when caught, placed backwards on a donkey and lead in procession to the beach where he is dumped in the sea. The Pack of Cards Inn was built in 1626 by George Ley to celebrate a win at cards. It is said to resemble a pack of cards with 52 windows, 4 floors and 13 doors on each floor. A trek up the Little Hangman and the Great Hangman hills will be rewarded with spectacular views of the moors and Devon coastline.
