The village of Upwey lies in the south of the county of Dorset, near to Weymouth. Due to the growth of Weymouth it has gradually become a suburb of the town. Upwey lies on the A354 road heading northwards from Weymouth on the way to Dorchester. Above Upwey, to the north, the River Wey rises at the foot of the chalk ridge of the South Dorset Downs and flows on through the village. At the source of the river is the Upwey Wishing Well, a tourist attraction as long ago as Victorian times. The site now has mature water gardens and a tea room. Upwey is also in Thomas Hardy country, 'The Trumpet Major' features a water mill built on the river in the 18th century. Oddly enough there is a monument close to the village called 'Hardy's Monument'. Also dedicated to a Thomas Hardy, this one is actually commemorating Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, made famous for serving with Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and at whom the words 'kiss me Hardy' were directed. In the 17th century William Sprague from Upwey left England on the Lyon's Whelp, bound for Massachussets. Along with his brothers, William helped to found Charlestown, Massachussets. William was also a direct ancestor of American comedian Lucille Ball.
