The village of Charlton Marshall has a population of a little over 1,000 and lies in the northern part of Dorset, two miles to the south of the market town of Blandford Forum. The village is situated on the River Stour and lies along the A350 road. Until 1956, it was served by a branch of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. Many parts of the local church of St Mary are medieval, including most of its tower and northern aisle. The rest was mainly rebuilt in the 18th century. The work was mostly done at the expense of Dr Charles Sloper, who is likely to have used the Bastard brothers John and William as architects for the project. The interior is a very rare example of rural Georgian church architecture. For a warm welcome in Charlton Marshall, you could visit The Charlton Inn, with its beamed ceilings and a log fire. The Charlton Inn offers food and accommodation in the form of en-suite rooms with Tea and Coffee making facilities and Television included. Close to Charlton Marshall and well worth a visit is the historic market town of Blandford Forum, home of the Badger Brewery (one of the town's largest industries).
