Leigh-on-Sea is situated west of Southend in Essex, 35 miles from London. Located next to the sea, Leigh has been primarily a fishing village since medieval times. It also had some success as a port, and The Mayflower is rumoured to have been built there. The Old Town, south of the railway, still operates fishing and cockling fleets and contains the famed "Cockle Sheds" with abundant amounts of fresh seafood for sale. Bell Wharf Beach is a small, sandy beach at the eastern end of Old Leigh. Along the High Street is the Old Smithy, rebuilt from two earlier cottages in 1860-1880, and now containing a "Heritage Centre". The Leigh Conservation Area rises from the Old Town up the hillside, centred around the 13th century St. Clement’s Church, library and library gardens. It contains many old buildings of architectural interest. The Leigh Folk Festival takes place in June and a regatta is held over one weekend in September. Other events include an annual Art Trail where local and invited international artists show their works in the area's shops, cafes and art galleries. Up the hill from the Old Town sits the main retail and commercial area of the Broadway.
