Great Yeldham is a large village in the Braintree district of north west Essex, on the banks of the River Colne. The village has a Post Office and general stores, as well as three pubs, The Waggon and Horses, The Three Bottles and the White Hart, plus there’s a Village Hall and a Sports Ground. The village church of St. Andrew’s forms an attractive group with the hall and the old rectory. Its most impressive feature is its handsome late fifteenth-century west tower Attractions include The Colne Valley Railway which is mostly in Castle Hedingham, but the track does just extend into Great Yeldham; and Ridgewell Airfield Museum, a small, private collection of World War II memorabilia displayed in and around the old hospital buildings site and dedicated to the brave men of the U.S.A.A.F. 381st Bomb Group (H) and 90 Squadron, R.A.F. who served out of Ridgewell Airfield during World War II. It’s open on the 2nd Sunday of each month from April to September. Admission is free. North of the village is Spencers’ Gardens Woods and Park, a very traditional, mid-Georgian country house with 90 acres of lovely gardens, woods and parkland, open for a variety of public events throughout the year.
