Overlooked by the Cotswold Hills, in the lush Severn Valley, Gloucester is perfectly located and easily accessible, from all corners of Britain.
Gloucester Cathedral is a Benedictine abbey church dating from 1089, once inside, the exquisite fan vaulted cloisters and the tomb of Edward II are a few of the delights awaiting you. The Cathedral is one of the locations in the movies 'Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone' and 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'. Nestling in College Court, next door to the Cathedral, you'll find the House of the Tailor of Gloucester, In 1897 Beatrix Potter sketched a tiny house in College Court. It is now the home for a magical attraction, bringing the story to life and a shop which stocks a wide range of Beatrix Potter gifts.
In the heart of the city centre, are the Folk and City Museums, these individual and fascinating museums will lead you through the complete Gloucester story, from its extraordinary history to the fascinating people who have lived there. On the edge of the city is Nature in Art, the first museum and art gallery in the country dedicated exclusively to art inspired by nature.
A brief walk from the city centre is Historic Gloucester Docks. The docks are home to the National Waterways Museum, The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum and Gloucester Antiques Centre.
Shopping is a must whilst in Gloucester, there are all the high street names in the Kings Walk and East Gate centres. Gloucester Docks offers waterside shopping in the Merchants quay shopping centre and for those collectors among you there is Gloucester Antiques centre, with five floors of antiques and collectibles. In the shadow of the cathedral is College Street home to many specialist shops.
Accommodation around the city is varied and can cater for all tastes. These range from country clubs to modern hotels and from country manor houses to homely bed and breakfasts. Population 111,000
