A popular commuter town in the borough of Hertsmere, South Hertfordshire is Potters Bar. Ideally located on junction 24 of the M25 and close to the A1M but crucially outside the London orbital, though only 18 miles to the city centre. There are high-speed over-ground rail links, as Potters Bar isn’t quite on the Tube Network. The town originated in the 13th century as part of Middlesex (until 1965), on one of the two main routes out of London to the north (the A1000) and growth/change only began in 1850 when the Great Northern Railway arrived. Recently the town has been in the news, with the train crash of April 2002. There are no places to stay here, as close-by is South Mimms with large hotels such as Travel Inns, etc. The town does have a remarkable number of pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants and take aways though! These are divided between the quirky actual High Street and Darkes Lane, which looks like a high street with big shops like Boots and Woolworths and banks! The two roads are pretty much parallel but one is at the top of the hill and the other at the bottom. To work off any excesses the Furzefield Centre (of national sporting excellence) has a large swimming pool and leisure complex. There’s also a tennis club, cricket club, a par 71 golf course (home to Tony Jacklin, British and US Open winner, and former Captain of the Ryder Cup team), the Wyllyots Centre for theatre, cinema and events and a small museum opposite it. There is surrounding countryside and Oakmere Park too, just off the High Street.
