Wrotham (pronounced Rootam) is a village situated on the Pilgrims' Way in Kent, at the foot of the North Downs. It is located one mile north of Borough Green and approximately five miles east of Sevenoaks. There is a separate village called Wrotham Heath about two miles to the south-east. The village has several historic buildings including St George’s Church. The current building, dating back to the 13th century, is thought to have been one of the first in England to be dedicated to St George. In a niche over the entrance to the porch is a little statue of St George. Wrotham has 4 pubs within a hundred yards of each other. Situated along The High Street are The Rose and Crown, The Three Post Boys and The George and Dragon, and where the High Street dog-legs and meets Bull Lane is The Bull Hotel. Opposite the iron gates of the historic manor house of Wrotham Place, now the HQ of Lawrie Plantation Services, is a stone set into a wall commemorating the day in June 1799 when a Lieut. Colonel Shadwell was shot dead near there by a deserter. Nearby attractions include Brands Hatch, Ightham Mote and Knole Park.
