Amesbury nestles in a curve of the River Avon six miles north of Salisbury and is well served by hotels and guest houses. A little West along the A303 is Stonehenge. More evidence of pre-historic activity is found within walking distance from the town at the Neolithic earthworks of Woodhenge which pre-dates Stonehenge. It once contained a wooden circle, now marked by concrete posts. Another historic attraction, also of wood, sits a little to the west of the town straddling the Amesbury bypass. Known as the Trafalgar Clumps it's a spread of beech clumps planted to represent the line of English and French ships at the battle of the Nile. This is thought to have been planted 200 years ago at the bequest of Horatio Nelson's beau, Lady Hamilton . A lesser known attraction is Amesbury Abbey. The Abbey itself is no more but in its place stands a classical mansion. The estate opens to the public twice a year so visitors can see the 'Chinese Summerhouse' designed by Sir William Chambers designer of the 'Pagoda' at Kew. Probably the town's oldest building is St Mary and St Melor Abbey Church, along Church Street, which is Norman in origin.
