As a town St Annes on Sea is considered a new town by those who live in Lytham as St Annes on Sea did not exist before the 1800’s. A result of Victorian enterprise the town is laid out along the lines of a garden city with wide tree lined street and distinctive properties. St Annes is a popular seaside town in Lancashire in the North West of England close to the larger and better known town of Blackpool. A consortium of East Lancashire businessmen bought most St Annes on Sea form the Clifton family with the intention of developing an up market residential town and seaside resort. They mapped out the town and surrounding area building a pier, shops and houses and the gardens, today known as Ashton Gardens. The gardens being named in honour of Lord Ashton who rescued the gardens when it seemed that the local council wanted it to become self financing by adding amusement arcades and adding fairground style rides. He later purchased additional adjoining land and increased the size of the gardens. Today they are listed in the GradeII division of the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. St Annes on Sea may today be inexorably linked with Lytham but it does have its own distinct identity and is worth visiting to explore the architecture and facilities that it has to offer. St Annes on Sea offers residents and visitors a marvellous shopping square that, weather permitting in the summer months, plays host to a variety of street entertainers. The blend of a spacious shopping Square, street entertainment throughout the summer months, lovely parks and gardens brimming with flowers are reminicent of a bygone era, whilst Pleasure Island and Salters Wharf provide lots of family fun, whatever the weather. The town has developed four of the best golf courses in the country these being the Royal Lytham, the Old Links, Green Drive and Fairhaven Golf Club. .
