On the north bank of the River Welland lies the historic town of Market Deeping in Lincolnshire. Here, the river forms the border between Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. The village is situated on the old Roman road of Ermine Street or the A15, right where it meets with the A16. Peterborough is to be around eight miles to the south of the town. It is conveniently situated for access to London and the North of England, via the A1 and A1(M). The town is the second largest of The Deepings and has held a market since at least 1220. It is well known for its beautiful stone buildings, most of which date from the 17th century. The stone bridge that the A15 uses to cross the River Welland was opened in 1842 and cost so much to build that the firm who built it were made bankrupt by the contract. The village church is dedicated to Saint Guthlac and dates mostly from the 15th century. This bustling little market town is served by the Deeping Stage Hotel, the Towngate Inn, The Bull Inn and Old Coach House (located by the River Welland). All of them are worth a visit if you have an interest in old buildings with character. You will also find accommodation and refreshment at these establishments.
