Long Bennington is a large pleasant village on the banks of the River Witham in the county of Lincolnshire, which is home to just over eighteen hundred people, from a small agricultural settlement the village grew when the Romans arrived, centuries later a group of Cistercian Monks built a Priory here in 1175, and later the quarrying of Lime led to its prosperity. It's surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Vale of Belvoir which stretches for miles; its location will always attract walkers and cyclists as the long distance footpath of the Viking Way journeys through here. The village has an interesting history which dates back many centuries, a legacy of which remains with the impressive Norman church dedicated to St Swithin whose pinnacled tower still graces the skyline. It was once on the important coaching route from Scotland to London, visitors today have three delightful pubs and restaurants to choose from, there are a handful of local shops for that essential purchase, although as it's positioned between the bustling towns of Grantham and Newark it really is perfectly placed. For those who wish to linger, there is a fabulous range of places to stay from Georgian elegance, comfortable B&B's, and even an Elizabethan Long House to try.
