Tower Hill is an elevated area that separates the Tower of London from the eastern perimeter of the City of London. In past times, many of the Tower's high-profile prisoners were publicly executed on Tower Hill. Among them was Thomas More, the author, statesman and Lord Chancellor who was beheaded for treason in 1535 after a series of disagreements with Henry VIII. Trinity Square, the site of the first permanent scaffold, is a much less grisly place today. Its gardens contain the Tower Hill Memorial, remembering the thousands of seamen who died during the two world wars. Also in Trinity Square is a splendid Edwardian listed building with a huge portico and decorative statues. Once occupied by the Port of London Authority, it's now being transformed into a £250 million hotel. Visitors to the Tower of London might enjoy taking time out in the sloping Tower Hill Plaza, which commands views of both the Tower and the Thames, or in Wakefield Gardens. Here, a remnant of London's Roman Wall is on view, as well as a statue of a Roman emperor. Other Roman and Saxon remains are preserved at All Hallows by the Tower, the oldest church in the CIty.
