Mill Hill, in north-west London, is an ideal base for drivers. Situated close to the M1, it offers fast access into the capital while also acting as a gateway to the Midlands and the north. It's a pleasant place in its own right, nudging into the Green Belt with acres of countryside views surrounding its residential and shopping districts. Mill Hill is also home to some important learning centres, notably the National Institution for Medical Research and the University of London Observatory, housed in a striking group of buildings. The village of Mill Hill originated in the 10th Century, if not earlier, developing alongside an ancient road now known as The Ridgeway. Some historic farms and houses from later times have survived here, as well as an obsolete nuclear-bomb shelter, now a listed building and sometime TV location. Mill Hill is renowned for its annual Music Festival and weekly jazz concerts at the local Sports Club, while golfers are within easy reach of three courses. Nature-lovers will enjoy the Scratchwood and Moat Mount woodland as well as the grasslands of Arrandene Open Space. Mill Hill Park, meanwhile, holds a Green Flag award for its flowerbeds, nature reserve and sports facilities.
