Kilburn is a busy area of north London filled with shops, pubs and restaurants, both traditional and contemporary. Gastro pubs do good business in Kilburn, a settlement that originally developed around a priory in the 1100s. Its main artery, Kilburn High Road, was once part of the Roman road Watling Street. Now, as part of the A5, it forms the borough boundary between Camden and Brent. In the 1700s, people travelled to Kilburn to drink medicinal water from the local wells, although the district didn't expand much until the early 1800s. Kilburn is famously home to a sizeable Irish community, a fact reflected in many of its pubs, shops and sporting choices as well as the annual St Patrick's Day celebrations. However, the neighbourhood is truly multicultural, with people of all cultures and classes getting along happily. The community united at the beginning of 2008 in an ongoing campaign to protect the future of the much-loved Gaumont State, a Grade II-listed Art Deco cinema turned bingo hall which had recently been sold. Another local landmark is the 19th Century St Augustine's Church, with its towering gothic spire. Kilburn is also home to the widely respected Tricycle Theatre, cinema and art gallery.
