Situated at the north east corner of Norfolk, Cromer is a lively resort town that manages to retain its gentility. The town has a largely Victorian air, as it boomed in that era after the arrival of the railway in 1877, and in the 1890s was rather fashionable. There is something Victorian too about a pier that still has end of the pier shows, and that offers the simple pleasure for children (and their parents) of crabbing, and an excellent beach for the joys of sandcastle building. Crabs are a key component of the town’s identity, with aficionados claiming Cromer crabs are sweeter than those found elsewhere in Britain. There may be something to that claim – Cromer crabs can be taken at a smaller size than is usual in the UK, and the marine geography is special here, with an undersea chalk shelf running nearby. Cromer has roots well before the Victorian era of course (even the name was once different - it was called Shipden in the distant past). The medieval church has an imposing tower, the highest church tower in Norfolk. And just a couple of miles south of the town is 17th-century Felbrigg Hall, a National Trust property with an important collection of Grand Tour paintings. But it is the sea that is the town’s heart. There are still fishermen landing their catches, and mariners are grateful for the protection offered by the lighthouse and by the famous Cromer lifeboats, whose history can be explored in the impressive Henry Blogg museum on the promenade.
