The village of Stoke Bruerne lies on the Grand Union Canal about four miles east of Towcester in Northamptonshire. There has been a settlement at Stoke Bruerne since ancient times and it is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It is a charming and typical English village containing many stone and thatched cottages. In Nicholson's Ordnance Survey Guide to the Waterways, it is described as 'the best example of a canal village in this country'. Some of the features that make this such a special example include Blisworth Tunnel, the second longest navigable tunnel in Britain. Also in the village, you can visit the Canal Museum which has indoor and outdoor exhibits, including a pair of special boat scales. The exhibits in the museum tell a fascinating story of life on the waterways as Britain went through the Industrial Revolution. You can enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the boats go by in the museum's new waterside café. The village features charming stone cottages, which face the canal the way cottages in most villages would face the street. Over the water from the museum is The Boat Inn, which has been run by the Woodward family since 1877. Here you can enjoy food and drink in a charming waterside location.
