| 10 Places to Stay

Westport is a beautiful riverside town looking out over Clew Bay - an Atlantic inlet filled with islands. The majestic Croagh Patrick mountain forms a dramatic backdrop for Westport which, unusually in Ireland, was a planned town, built in the 18th Century. Among its attractions are a tree-lined boulevard stretching out alongside the River Carrowbeg, complete with imposing Georgian buildings. Westport combines the charm of traditional pubs, shops and festivals with contemporary amenities including conference halls, fully equipped leisure centres, gourmet restaurants and art galleries. It's family- friendly, too, being close to a chain of sandy beaches fringing Clew Bay. Also popular is the children's animal park at Westport House, a fine country mansion now open to the public. The most historic landmark, however, is the 2,500-foot Croagh Patrick, a place of pilgrimage, where Ireland's patron saint, St Patrick, allegedly fasted for forty days back in 441 AD. Other fascinating attractions include the Westport Linen Mill and Museum, the Westport Heritage Centre and the Clew Bay Heritage Centre, at the harbour. Unsurprisingly, Westport offers great opportunities for boating, yachting and sea and freshwater fishing. Many outdoor activities are enjoyed around these parts, from hiking, cycling and climbing to golfing, riding and clay pigeon shooting.
