Sutton in Ashfield is almost adjacent to Mansfield, lying to the west and south west of the town. The A38 road leads out of Mansfield and cuts through part of Sutton in Ashfield on its way to junction 28 of the M1. The M1 junction is only two miles away from the town and therefore Sutton in Ashfield gives excellent access to all parts of the country. The earliest known settlement of the area was in Saxon times and the town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Sutone'. The first Cotton Mill was built in Sutton by the Unwin Family c1770. Originally it was oxen and horse powered, then later on water was used to turn the machines until eventually the change was made to steam power. In 1851, after a change of ownership it became a silk mill, before being heavily damaged by fire in 1875. Sutton in Ashfield boasts the largest sundial in Europe. This unique tourist attraction is to found in Portland Square, next to the Idlewells Shopping Centre and Sutton Community College. For entertainment, Sutton in Ashfield has The Diamond, a music venue and pub that claims to be Nottinghamshire's finest tribute band venue.
