Maghera is a small market town situated at the foot of the beautiful Sperrin Mountains, in the county of Londonderry in Northern Ireland, and it is home to over three thousand people. Its fascinating history is captured all around, dating back many centuries. Visitors will uncover the nearby ancient Megalithic Burial Tomb of Tirnoney, and the impressive ruins of the Monastery built in the 6th Century which is reached at the end of a long lane where there is still a poignant wall sculpture to be seen said to be the oldest in Ireland. The village grew in importance with the arrival of the monastery and St Lurach's church, where nearby an ancient Round Tower can still be found. Streets radiate from the delightful long wide street where a stroll will uncover a fabulous range of shops to browse, and pubs offering a drop of the black stuff. Main Street also has restaurants and bars, and an historic hotel where the old mounting block is still visible. For anyone wishing to stay for a while there's cottages, comfortable B&B's and hotels on offer. It will always attract walkers and cyclists here as it's surrounded by attractive countryside and the Sperrin Mountains which have a network of paths, twelve forests and meandering rivers close by.
