Shipton under Wychwood is a village in West Oxfordshire, on the banks of the River Evenlode. It takes its name from its location in the historic forest of Wychwood. The village is established around Shipton Court, the estate of the Lacey family. The parish church of St. Mary has a tower of circa 1200-1250 and a 15th century vaulted porch. It contains a 15th century stone pulpit, a large font of the same period and a Tudor wall monument. The 15th century Shaven Crown Hotel overlooks the village green and was once a guest house run by the monks of Bruern Abbey. The village has two other pubs: The Lamb Inn and The Red Horse on the High Street. About 2 miles south-east is the farmhouse of Langley, a largely mid-19th century building on the site of a royal hunting lodge built for Henry VII to use when hunting in the Wychwood Forest. Shipton-under-Wychwood is on the Oxfordshire Way footpath, which can be used to walk westwards up the Evenlode Valley to Bruern Abbey, or eastwards down the valley to Charlbury. Shipton Cricket Club has won the ‘National Village Knockout’ twice in recent years, playing the final of this competition at Lords.
