Wing is a small village in rural Rutland, situated a little to the south of Rutland Water. This charming village has 17th century houses built from stone quarried at nearby Barnack and Clipsham. A number of the houses feature roofs covered with stone slates from nearby Collyweston. The name of the village probably stems from the Old Norse word 'vengi' or field. The church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul had the spire removed during an extensive rebuild in 1875. There are still some remaining Norman parts of the building, including the south arcade from the mid 12th century and the slightly later north arcade and north doorway. The nearby Rutland Water reservoir is one of the county of Rutland's most outstanding features, providing many outdoor activities to visitors and providing a home to many wildfowl. Many visitors are attracted each year for the walking, cycling, bird watching, fishing and sailing to name but a selection of the activities on offer at Rutland Water. You can find refreshment in Wing at the King's Arms. The Cuckoo Inn, which closed in 2004, was named after a local legend. The story goes that locals long ago tried to keep spring in the village by erecting a fence around a cuckoo to keep it in the village. They were known as 'Wing fools' after the bird simply flew away. To be fair on the people of Wing, this story is quite common one and is unlikely to have actually originated in Wing.
