The 'Garden of England', so named for the profusion of fruit, flowers and vegetables grown here, Kent has more historic houses than any other county - Knole, Penshurst Place, Chartwell, Finchcocks, Groombridge Place and Scotney, Hever, Tonbridge, Chillham, Canterbury, Dover, Rochester and Leeds Castles to name but a few.

These are dotted about and in between lie the hop gardens, the trees in blossom and, in autumn, the orchards laden with fruit.

The closest county to the continental mainland, Kent has seen its fair share of 'action' over the years although the latest upheaval for the county, the Channel Tunnel, is now fully operational. This means that you could awake in one of England's prettiest villages, spend the day shopping in Paris and be home well in time for tea.
