England's third largest county and one blessed with a real holiday feel. In the north the moorland of Exmoor and the rugged coastline create an atmosphere of wilderness and exploration. Towns like Lynton and Barnstaple stand like beacons beckoning the traveller in at night. Inland, the picture book countryside is the epitome of England and probably explains why many English people holiday here.
Further south towns like Totnes and Tavistock are steeped in history and many fascinating structures pre-dating the Norman Conquest have survived. There are many buildings of great ecclesiastical note like Buckfast Abbey (where the monks still make stained glass and tonic wine), Buckland Abbey (home of Sir Francis Drake) and Torre Abbey in the area known as the Riviera because of its climate.
Historic houses worth visiting include Ugbrooke, Killerton and Powderham, Totnes and Dartmouth Castles. We have an excellent selection of accommodation from the county that witnessed the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers.
