Leitrim is one of Ireland's most scenic counties, rolling out a wealth of natural beauty in its towering mountains, glens, waterfalls and forests, rolling hills and drumlins, peatlands, rivers, lakes and even a small stretch of Atlantic coastline. It's an idyllic setting for sports and outdoor activities, scattered with friendly towns and villages where the restaurants serve fresh local produce and charming pubs are known for their fun-filled traditional music sessions. In Leitrim, drivers can chance upon any number of castle ruins, historic houses and heritage museums, while other visitors may opt to see the county from the water. Barge holidays, pleasure cruises and sailing are all popular in Leitrim, with the riverside town of Carrick-on- Shannon - the "cruising capital" - taking pride in its modern, colourful marina and also giving access to the great Shannon-Erne waterway, which flows through the county. The clean, clear rivers and numerous lakes provide for exceptional coarse and game fishing as well as rowing, swimming and adventurous watersports. Horse-riding is enjoyed all over Leitrim, and there are excellent facilities for beginners and experienced riders alike at Drumcoura Lake Resort and the Moorlands Equestrian and Leisure Centre at Drumshanbo, on the shores of Lough Allen. Golfers, meanwhile, will be delighted by the waterside courses at Ballinamore and, particularly, Carrick-on- Shannon, which offers some thrilling views over the countryside. There are endless opportunities for strolling, rambling and hill- walking, and for those who enjoy a more relaxing holiday, the Ard Nahoo health club, an eco retreat located in the North Leitrim Glens, takes some beating. Visitor attractions include the lakeside Parkes Castle at Five Mile Bourne, the Lough Rynn Estate, the steam railway at Dromod, Swan Island Open Farm near Ballinamore, Drumshanbo Visitor Centre, Drumkeerin Heritage Centre, and the folk museums at Kinlough, Carrigallen and Ballinamore.
