About Cheriton Bishop

10 miles from Exeter at the North Eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park is the Devon village of Cheriton Bishop. It is largely a farming community with a growing number of daily commuters to nearby towns and Exeter city. The name Cheriton Bishop means “Church town”. The church of St. Mary is part Norman including the font from 1083, with mostly 15th Century reconstruction. It has some aspects of interest including remnants of a pre-Reformation screen depicting St. Dennis carrying his head, one of only two such pictures believed to be in existence.
