Click below to list Natural Britain by county: Natural BritainNature can mean different things to different people. For some the word conjures up visions of genteel acres like Richmond Park in London, a sanctuary of stillness in the great metropolis; for others it can soar off into the spectacular and the dangerous - The Old Man of Hoy in the Orkney Islands for example, or the brooding presence of Helvelyn in The Lakes. Britain can offer a huge choice of natural sites running the gamut from peaceful to brutal. We have a fantastic variety of habitats and landscapes, and though wilderness areas like the Cairngorms are distant for most of us, Londoners can pop down to decidedly different Romney Marsh with ease; residents of Leeds can be in the North York Moors in next-to-no-time; Brummies can walk in the Malvern Hills without spending a fortune on fuel; Mancunians can see the Pennines from parts of the city. In these relatively small islands there is bound to be a natural wonders a few miles away if time for a trip is short. Or if you have the luxury of leisure there are some landmark destinations to see and stay at: base camp can be a cottage with a log fire, or spa hotel with Michelin-starred chef. The great secret is - prepare properly: clothing and shoes to suit the terrain; accommodation to suit your pocket; and information on your destination - this section is a pretty good starting point for that, and Information Britain can direct you to plenty of places to stay and even outdoor pursuit shops if you need them. So if you have some time, why not visit one of our great rivers; enjoy the majestic coastline; tramp the moors or scale Scafell? Best of all, mostly it's free. County Pages |
