Experience the Underground World of Cleveland’s Ironstone Mining Past at this award-winning museum on the coast…

The North York Moors and coast of East Cleveland used to be a major ironstone mining area. At its height at the end of the 19th century the industry supported some 80 mines with an annual production of nearly seven million tons!

What was life like for the people who worked in these mines?
How was the ironstone extracted?
What daily hazards did a 'trappy lad' have to endure?
…Indeed, what on earth did a trappy lad do?

The answers to all these questions and more are just waiting to be unearthed at the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum at Skinningrove, on the site of the first mine to open in the area in1848.

The opportunity to experience the underground world of a real ironstone mine in the company of enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides awaits!
