Born 1830. Died 1882 - Scottish oceanographer.

Poor health forced him to leave Edinburgh University. Lecturer in botany, zoology and geology. His Depths of the Sea (1877) was first general textbook on oceanography. Took part in HMS Challenger expedition (1872-76), responsible for overseeing analysis and reports of expedition. The Wyville Thomson Ridge was named after him. Knighted in 1876.
